ZIP codes
are an invented system post codes
used by the United
States Postal Service (USPS) from 1963. ZIP,
stands for
Zone Improvement Plan and should be written with capital letters. The
meaning of the word “zip”, to travel fast, gave the idea of mail
being delivered at speed when the code has been used in the postal
address.
The underlying format
consists of five decimal
numerical digits. In the 1980s an extended ZIP+4 code, included the
five ZIP code digits, a hyphen, and four more digits in order to
determine more precise locations than the ZIP code alone could do.
