 The states of America were formed from Britain's American colonies, and after the Treaty of Paris in 1783 the country became recognized as a nation - The United States of America. Though there are now fifty states the original US states numbered 13, and 37 were added gradually during the 19th and 20th centuries. The Civil War (1861-65) nearly split America into North and South as the Confederacy of 11 southern slave-owning states attempted to secede. the North won and slave owning was abolished.
