THE TASK MANAGER
A Task Manager might sound like a
slave driver in a suit, but actually it is a very useful addition to
Windows XP. In fact more like your slave.
So how to summon this engaging genie? You could try rubbing a magic
lamp, but if you are clean out of bric-a-brac, try Shift + Ctrl + Esc
or Ctrl+Alt+Del. If you are not a fingers person right-click on an
empty area of the Task Bar and select "Task Manager", with or without a
loud cry of, "open sesame!" Alternatively, flick your wand, err sorry,
point your cursor to an empty area of the Task Bar, right-click and
choose "Task Manager". If you are a very boring person just use Start -
Run and type "taskman" and run.
OK, so the wonderful magic window is now open to your wondering,
round-eyed gaze. Your sweaty, little fingers are itching to try
something, but you don't want to go into orbit. "Just a little try,"
you plead, "something harmless, but be gentle with me."
No problem, mate, here's a nifty little trick. Listed in the Task
Manager are all the currently open applications. Supposing you want to
use a word-processing application to compare notes and shift some from
one to the other. Normally you open two instances of the application
and get annoyed when you shift focus from one to the other as they
overlap. Simply highlight both in your ever-obliging Task Manager and
select "tile horizontal" or "tile vertical", and they will sit happily
together like two little doves on a branch. Coo!
By the way, if you have two programs sitting side by side and you want
to call a third that is hidden or minimized to the Task Bar (yes, the
thingy at the bottom) use Alt+Tab. But, of course, you knew that. But
did you know that minimizing to the Task Bar frees up a lot of RAM?
Ah-ha! Thought not.
Now, what more can we do with dear old TM? There are a great many
things you can do with processes but to explain them would hurt my
head. I prefer to use Wintasks
5 Pro
a great little utility from Uniblue that makes it all much easier. If
your PC is a maggot-infested, writhing pit of worms and viruses they
show up as processes, but with this ally you can leap upon them yelling
KILL! KILL! KILL!
But, gentle reader, do take a moment to consider what Mrs So-and-So
next door, with her tumbler pressed against the wall, might be thinking.
