"An ode to Beckham? What about a verse for Keane,
Boyd or McGhee?
David Beckham's World Cup ending Achilles injury has been honoured
by the poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy. Enough of that, what about
paying tribute to Scotland's sporting icons?
By Grant Russell"
"It's time for the creative minds of Scottish sports fans to
go one better than Duffy and immortalise their favourites. Or, failing that,
come up with some better alternatives to Beckham's ode" Chortler

believe you can do better then by all means

Raise the Hammer
The folks in Hamilton Ontario throught he blog Raise The Hammer
are looking for some verse to promote city life. An opportunity
for you to show what you can do with a neat piece of verse.
"Please post your poems about Hamilton or city life
in general - free verse, or one of the more traditional kinds; for
example, a haiku or a sonnet.
You can make it as highfalutin or comical (here are instructions
for limericks) as you choose, but keep it G-rated, please, so we
can feel free to show the kids we know or even to get them to try
their hand at it, too."
Billings Gazette
This article in Billings Gazette
relates to a limerick competition that is now over but by reading
the entries you will get some idea of the type of verse that wins.
They do not always conform to the standard limerick structure but
the editors who pick the winners probably have some subjective input.
" Limericks may be a trivial bit of nonsense, but Billings Gazette readers take
them seriously.
More than 190 people sent in entries to The Gazette's Limerick Contest with
many limerick writers sending in multiple poems."
