Darts Around The World

Darts, traditionally the game of the English country pub, developed from the ancient practice of archery. For the protection of the realm, Englishmen were obliged by law to practice regularly, and successfully routed William Wallace's Scots troops at Falkirk in 1298. At the Battle of Bannockburn (1314) the Scots King, Robert the Bruce, used cavalry to disperse the English archers and ensure his victory over the remaining troops.

In 1415 a small group of Henry V's English archers achieved fame with their legendary longbow skills by defeating the heavily armoured might of the French nobility at the Battle of Agincourt. The King of France had threatened to cut off the two drawing-fingers of every captured bowman, giving rise to the victorious 'two-finger salute' of today.

Eventually, gunpowder and firearms made archery redundant though it flourishes today as a sport. A game of darts at the inn replaced the competitiveness and camaraderie of the butts. Darts is commonly known as 'arrows' and the French name of 'Fléchettes' means 'little arrows'. Darts spread in popularity and is now played around the world with many leagues and associations.
