Claim Your Invaluable Legacy of Proverbs.

By William Clark

Why?

Countless millions of people have lived on our planet since life began. During the course of their existence certain insights, recurring ideas, pieces of knowledge or wisdom helped them understand the human condition and cope with its problems.

These were condensed into short, memorable, pithy sayings known as proverbs, maxims, axioms and the like. The Proverbs of the Nations accumulated and now provide a powerful source of knowledge and understanding to fortify and sustain your life. Your forebears have left you this inheritance.

Says who?

William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania (1664-1718) advised his children (1699): "The Wisdom of Nations lies in their Proverbs, which are brief and pithy. Collect and learn them. They are notable measures and directions for human life. You have Much in Little; they save time and speaking, and on occasion may be the fullest and safest answers."

Winston Churchill, the great British war hero and multitalented individual, recommended that ordinary people should acquire a good stock of quotations.

How do I use it?

Proverbs can help you to utilize this vast store of priceless wisdom to lead a happy and fulfilled life. You can undo the damage of false thinking, spin, misguided marketing and all the artificial, trendy gone-in-a-minute attitudes corroding the human spirit with deception and delusion.

Proverbs are organic and natural -- created by ordinary people in moments of extraordinary insight. They were particularly prevalent at a time when the majority of folk had little or no book learning. Keeping their sayings short and pithy aided memory and also gave a greater sense of impact and authority as wisdom passed from father to son and mother to daughter.

A simple piece of advice such as "Light your lamp before it becomes dark" could be taken at face value but once understood and appreciated at the literal level its deeper meaning gradually seeped in: being prepared for coming events and hazards of all kinds and not waiting till they are upon you before taking action. This can be further simplified to the motto: "Be Prepared."

The perfect solution for your needs

Think of proverbs as rows of little bottles on a shelf in a pharmacy or herbalist's store -- each labeled and of a different color. You need to locate the phial of proverbial wisdom for your specific problem.

Let us suppose you are suffering depression and contemplating suicide. How can you break out of this? What wisdom is there in proverbs to come to your rescue?

"Every cloud has a silver lining*

A dark depression descends on your life; despair, gloom, misery fills your horizons -- so where is the silver lining you wonder?

Be positive, the smart people tell us, so how do you do that when the Heavens are tumbling in on you? The first thing is to analyze your situation -- is it really as bad as you think? Is there a wise friend or professional you can unburden yourself too -- someone who has experienced the same problems and has come through? The marvel of the Internet is that you have the whole world to communicate with -- there's bound to be someone with similar problems.

So don't despair; there is always someone worse off than you and plenty of potential help.

Many people's successes in life resulted from a reaction to a period of adversity -- where they learned the philosophy of fight till you drop, never give up. Sir Winston Churchill faced Britain's darkest hour with resolution and utmost determination -- marching on to a shining victory. He often suffered 'black dog' depressions but always overcame them. So can you."

The one for you

There is always a proverb that speaks out to you as if it has been waiting there for centuries to deal with your need for insight. Who knows, perhaps it was your distant direct ancestor who first coined the expression, or some exotic sage in a faraway land; but somehow, due to the universality of the human mind and experience, it is just right for you here and now.
