Spyware and Anti-spyware
Spyware is everywhere. These small pieces of software infiltrate
your system and get up to no good. They monitor your web use, disable
security settings, capture your private data (like passwords and
bank/credit card details) and generally plague you with
pop ups and annoying adverts. And if that's not enough they can
also be involved with identity theft too!
How do I know if I have spyware?
You can suspect the presence of spyware, adware or malware if
your computer shows symptoms of:
- An increases in sluggish,
slow performance.
- Toolbars you don't remember installing appear.
- Pop up ads annoy you, especially if they are not connected with the
site you are viewing. Often they will be adult-site related.
- Your
browser settings might alter inexplicably and prove impossible to
change back.
Where does spyware come from?
If you download some freeware or shareware programs they can
install unwanted spyware components. Carefully read the license
agreements as they sometimes try to make it legal by mentioning
the fact somewhere in the middle of a whole lot of boring legalese.
Some web sites indulge in "drive-by downloads" by exploiting
security flaws in Web browsers. As you surf, their code attacks
and installs something nasty or annoying on your computer.
Removal of Spyware
The solution to the spyware problem starts with avoiding the
sort of sites that are likely to be disreputable. Be careful what
you download - look for reputable download sites that have a policy
of refusing software that contains spyware, such as Cnet. Commercial
and freeware products are available and one of the best, popular
anti-spyware solutions is XsoftSpy with many corporate users.
They offer a free scan that can be downloaded. This
lets you see exactly what nasties are lurking in your system
and gives removal options. Don't wait till a disaster
happens - act now to safeguard your computer.
