 50 States and Capitals

USA List by Region and Mnemonic

Learning the 50 states and capitals by region is a method using the idea of chunking. Breaking up the list into parts reduces the strain of memorizing and gives a sense of progress as each chunk is mastered. You can print out to help study.

Census Bureau-designated regions

  • Fix the idea of the region in mind first and then attempt each division.
  • Hold the image of the division in mind and repeat the states until you can do so without looking.
  • You might find it helpful to make up memorable phrases (mnemonics) to link  to the state name.

A selection is given below to get you started but something personal to you might be more memorable.  Fun, ridiculous exaggerations often stick in the memory.

Region 1 (Northeast)
